The purpose of SPID is to celebrate Spartanburg's first KaBOOM! community playground build day. Which was held on July 29, 2006 at Irwin Park. It was the 175th birthday of the City of Spartanburg.
200 volunteers came out to be apart of history that day. I won't lie it was hard work, and did not go as smooth as we would have liked it. Since then Southside Unity in the Community has been committed to get trained and join in on the fun of other Kaboom! lead playground builds. We are so proud of our partnership with KaBOOM! Were always braggin' on the great things that KaBOOM! is doing across the nation for young people.
Although we did not build a new playground today, SPID was evidence of our growth and shows our commitment to educating Spartanburg's youth about ways and reasons why they must keep the community and parks clean, get out and play at least 60 minutes of the day, eat healthier snacks, and encourage their friends to do the same until it become a ripple effect on our entire nation.
Our volunteers were so excited to be there today, they said that they can not wait to play more old school game like Kickball, four block, and jumprope again. We may have to host more than two Play days next year! If we have to, WE WILL!
Many thanks go out to KaBOOM!, other sponsors, dedicated volunteers, and the wonderful happy faces that left Irwin Park today! Look for new pictures soon!
