NFL PLAY 60 teamed up with KaBOOM! to help communities improve playspaces with $25,000 in playspace improvement grants!

From September 19th-27th 2009, over 1,000 communities across the country held fun-filled Play Days that resulted in smiling faces and improved parks and playgrounds everywhere.

$10,000 Playspace Improvement Grantees

Wow! We could all learn from these two communities!

After a month long online vote, these two communities were chosen as America’s favorite Play Days. Each hosting exemplary, community building Play Days, these organizers were each selected to receive a $10,000 playspace improvement grant from NFL PLAY 60 to spruce up their playspace.

Play Ontonagon

Ontonagon, MI

At the Ontonagon Play Day, families worked on the baseball field, painted the dugouts, and hauled brush. The kids participated in a mile fun walk, played kickball and soccer, and ate delicious food. They even had the chance to press their own apple cider! Your vote could help Ontonagon purchase playground amenities, including basketball hoops, picnic tables, benches, trashcans, and a drinking fountain.

Brusly Kittens Play!

Brusly, LA

At the Brusly Elementary Play Day, the kids played tug-of-war and they held sack races. Teachers raised over $1,500 by participating in a “Kiss the Pig” contest! Parent volunteers improved the playground by removing an unsafe fence and replacing the chain links of the swings. The entire community turned out to celebrate play, and your vote could help Brusly Elementary reach their goal of a new playground!

Chosen for their all-around great Play Days and efforts to give back to their communities, these groups each received a $1,000 playspace improvement grant from NFL PLAY 60 to spruce up their playspace.

Elvira’s Field Day – Tucson, AZ

Kids chose from 15 different stations, including basketball, skateboarding, long jump, dance, and a water fight with sponges. Parents helped break ground on a new garden.

Fourteen beach balls were signed and returned!

Play is essential in this community where many children are at risk for developing diabetes. Fun games were used to promote healthy living. Kids chose from many activities including: giant bowling, wheelchair races, a chalk mural, and more.

Nampa Play Day – Nampa, ID

Families played Frisbee golf, took archery lessons, climbed a rock wall, and kayaked in the community pool. Nampa Parks and Recreation will use the grant to install musical, ADA accessible playground equipment. Congratulations to this Playful City USA community!

NBC Community Play Day – Houston, TX

Everyone came together for a day of fun and laughter. Groups represented included the Girl Scouts, religious leaders, and community members. The youth raced in an egg relay, listened to live music, and participated in a hula hoop contest.

End of Summer Play Day – Oldsmar, FL

Children played badminton, jumped rope, created chalk art, learned about canoe safety and did many more fun activities. To spruce-up the park, the group did a variety of park beautification projects, including tree and flower planting.
