The effect this Play Day will have on the community

Why are you planning a Play Day for your community?

Our Play Day will be a vehicle for our school, community and business families to gather together in support of each other as we celebrate the City of Laurel's designation as a Playful City USA for 2010.  We will be able to provide the means for our school families to get to know and build relationships with each other.  Today, it is so important for families to have the support of their neighbors and friends as we raise our children to become our future leaders and advocates of play.  Play is the basis upon which children learn to build respect for each other and for their environment.  Our Play Day goal is to provide our families with a healthy, free opportunity to be together and have some fun.

How would you use a grant to improve your playspace?

Our school community would partner again with the City of Laurel to really make our backyard a viable space for playing soccer and baseball.  Our school is in the process of being renovated and there are temporary classrooms currently located on the baseball field.  Once they are removed, we know there will be lots of work to do to make the field safe and playable.  We would also love to improve the drainage of our field as well, it can get a little swampy after heavy rains.

How would improvements of your playspace impact your community?

The improvements would add greatly needed space for our community at large to play on.  There is a great shortage of fields on which the many soccer, baseball and softball teams can play in our City.  It would further solidify the relationship created by our Build Day last year with the City of Laurel and our school family.  The field would be located next to the Bike Path that the City is in the process of phasing in to connect our parks and adjacent to our fabulous playgrounds which will probably need some added mulch by the spring.
