The effect this Play Day will have on the community

Why are you planning a Play Day for your community?

The Highland Neighborhood is a low income area with a large Latino population. We are trying to bring together this community by providing opportunities for reading by providing both English and Spanish books for free and by providing fun, simple, and safe games for the kids to participate in.

How would you use a grant to improve your playspace?

The school park is in need of a new drinking fountain and the four square and basketball area could you new striping too. The school needs a new sound system for the gym.  The current sound system has been there for at least 30 years or more.

How would improvements of your playspace impact your community?

Both the school and the community have little or no funding to add play items or rehabilitate the items they have. Any small amount of money could be matched by the Salem Parks Foundation, School District or other grant for larger improvements or the money itself could provide a new drinking fountain for the play area and restripe the courts. They also need a new sound system for the gym area where they hold their games and physical activities during most of the school year since we have a long cool fall/winter. The sound system they have presently dates back to the 70's!
